About The Newtown Outdoor Festival
- UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT!
We are delighted to announce that a Not-for-Profit Limited company has now been set up to run this successful event called Newtown Outdoor Festival Ltd.
Please be patient as Matt & Rich take over from Mike and Paula. We hope to run the same events in 2024 with the help from our existing partners along with a few more for next year. WATCH THIS SPACE!

Note: All featured events below were the 2023 events, 2024 events are subject to confirmation. We will be contacting our partners as soon as possible to make arrangements for 2024.
Join us for a weekend of fun and activity. Walk, canoe, cycle, run, picnic, fish, take pictures, garden, sing, dance, concerts, archery, food trucks. The daytime festival events will be centred on the hub at Oriel Davies Gallery and will start from there. There is plenty of space to meet up outside, access to the gallery’s public toilets and parking, including disabled parking nearby.
This annual festival is open to everyone.

Time: Throughout The Day
Location: Register at Oriel Davies Gallery
Walking – guided walks starting between 09:30 and 13:00, depending on distance, organized by Walking Newtown.
These are open to all abilities and ages. Register for the walks at Oriel Davies at least 15 minutes before the start of your chosen walk. Children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult. See the daily programmes from the menu at the top right for a list of the walks offered and their start time. More details on each walk are available at Walking Newtown Festival Walks.
Prefer to go on your own? Make your own walking group! 16 longer walks and many short town strolls can be downloaded FREE from the Walking Newtown web site to enjoy with your own family or friends at your convenience. The site has more information on all our guided and self-guided walks

This 15th C hall house was formerly one of Owain Glyndwr’s parilaments. Learn about its history and architecture with Tim Chilton. Places limited so prebooking essential with Eventbrite.
Navigation

Location: Meet Oriel Davies Gallery
Navigation – Introduction to map reading and navigation – Organized by Bryn Walking.
Starting at 10 am with some introductory theory followed by a navigated walk of about 5 km with a picnic break in the middle. Bring water and a packed lunch. For more details click “Saturday”, above.

canoeing

Location: Oriel Davies Gallery to sign up. Sessions on the Severn River.
Saturday: 6 FREE taster sessions. Organized by Welshpool Canoe Club and Newtown Paddlers, assisted by Brenin Adventures.
Come and try out canoeing under the expert care of members of the Welshpool Canoe Club and Newtown Paddlers. An introduction on the bank will be followed by water sessions so you can have a go.
Booking opens on the day at 09:30 at the Canoe Event Gazebo in front of Oriel Davies Gallery and numbers limited. Come early so as not to be disappointed. First come, first served. See Saturday Programme on the menu above for details.
Guided cycle rides

Location: Start at Oriel Davies Gallery. See daily programmes for details
Saturday: Cycle ride by sustainable transport charity Sustrans
Open to all, children must be accompanied by an adult. An easy 5 mile ride along the canal path to Pwll Penarth Nature Reserve with stops for taking photos and snacks. See Saturday Programme.
Sunday: Social Ride for women with the Border Biking Belles.
Open to women 18+. A guided group ride of around 15 or 20 miles around Newtown’s countryside for beginners and intermediates with some experience riding on roads and in a group.
Make sure your bike is road-worthy. Prebooking essential for both events. Booking now open. See Sunday programme.
alpaca fun

10:00 onwards during the day organized by Hightimbers Alpacas. Walk with alpacas at 11:00 and 1400
Location: Town Park Green near Oriel Davies Gallery
Alpaca Meet & Greet – The alpacas are friendly and trained to be handled and will walk with you when haltered. They are shy but quite inquisitive especially around children. They love to watch people, maybe sniff your hand or head and love to be stroked on the neck.
Alpaca Walks – There will be two gentle alpaca strolls where a lucky few can hold their halters on an amble through the parks. Numbers are very limited so come early to book your place to stroll with these wonderful animals.
There will also be a stall selling a small range of alpaca merchandise.
Park Run

Location: Start at Dolerw Bridge
Park Run – 9 am starting at Dolerw Park Bridge. This is the regular free 5k park run. Open to all to complete at your own pace, no experience necessary. If you haven’t joined them before, go to the web site, www.parkrun.org.uk/register/ and register in order to get your run timed.
Fly casting

Fishing – Fly casting lessons
Booking on the day at the Oriel Davies Gallery Hub. . Each casting lesson will start with approx. 20 mins demonstration and then an hour for people to have a go themselves. These will all take place in the park with no hooks on the lines.
Newtown wildlife

Explore Newtown’s wildlife with Open Newtown in collaboration with BIS & Mid Wales Ecology
Open Newtown, Mid Wales Ecology, and Biodiversity Information Service for Powys & the Brecon Beacons join up for a foray into Newtown’s wildlife. Every hour one of the team will be leading a Wildlife Walk – go on a bug hunt, learn how to record what you see, explore the plants that are present, or try out come techniques for collecting and recording wildlife. For details see the Saturday programme from the menu at the top.
Groove dance

Groove dance with Meltem Arikan
Sponsored by Oriel Davies Gallery. The Groove sessions are drop in and run for 45 minutes in total Everyone is welcome to this dynamic and creative dance experience led by Turkish novelist and playwright Meltem Arikan. There is no right or wrong way to move in this inclusive outdoor activity.

Fun bicycle powered activities to promote cycling and sustainability. Get creative on these recycled and re-purposed bikes to make a flurry of bubbles or your own art.

Archery taster sessions with the Hafren Foresters Archery Club
Come and have a go at this ancient sport. Experienced coaches will be on hand for those who want to try. Equipment and training will be provided for those interested to try this fun skill. Anyone 8 and over is welcome but children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult. Book on the day at our hub at Oriel Davies.

The Outdoor Partnership will be running a drop in stall with hints and tips on how to stay safe in the outdoors, numerous prize give-a-ways and bag packing demos throughout the day. The Outdoor Partnership is a charity based throughout Wales and parts of the UK which aims to enhance lives through outdoor activities.
