Location: Meet at Oriel Davies Gallery

Walking FREE guided walks starting between 09:30 and 11:30, depending on distance.  

These are open to all abilities and ages.  Register at Oriel Davies 15 minutes before the start of your chosen walk. Children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult.  For details on the walks in the programme see our web site: newtown.org.uk/the-walks/newtown-outdoor-festival-walks.

Prefer to go on your own?  Make your own walking group!  16 longer walks and many short town strolls can be downloaded FREE from the Walking Newtown Web site to enjoy with your own family or friends at your convenience.

FREE Strenuous walk – 14.5 miles Newtown to Kerry Ridgeway walk – A beautiful and varied walk, it reaches a height of 501 m on the Ridgeway and the whole walk has 699 m accumulation height gain – two valleys between the town and the ridgeway. The bulk of the walk is done on reaching the ridgeway at 8.5 miles with only one climb on the way back. Fantastic views of Newtown, then Kerry and Kerry Vale and fabulous views on a good day of Snowdonia from the ridgeway, where we will have lunch. Depending on the weather it can be quite exposed on the ridgeway. We should get back around 16:30.  Outdoor clothing is required and full waterproofs, your own packed lunch, snacks and drinks.

Creative Art Walk for Young People

FREE Creative walk with photographer Mohamed Hassan – Organized by Oriel Davies.  Book in advance

Following a circular route from Newtown to Pwll Penarth Nature Reserve – Walking Newtown’s Walk 7Bring a smart phone or camera to document the walk, explore the landscape and meet other young people.  Mohamed Hassan is a Welsh Egyptian artist whose photographic practice focuses on themes of identity and belonging. He photographs people and places and his work is exhibited internationally. Mo exhibited at Oriel Davies in 2022 in it exhibition Portraits – Responding to Rembrandt and  runs workshops for young people across Wales.

Places are limited so please book in advance on gallery website, at the gallery desk or by phone 01686 625041. Bring a packed lunch and dress for the weather with walking boots or trainers.

Outdoor Skills

Outdoor Skills organised by The outdoor Partnership

The Outdoor Partnership will be running a drop in stall with hints and tips on how to stay safe in the outdoors, numerous prize give-a-ways and bag packing demos throughout the day. The Outdoor Partnership is a charity based throughout Wales and parts of the UK which aims to enhance lives through outdoor activities. The Outdoor Partnership in Mid Wales runs subsidized events and activities and works with third sector organisations to improve access to the outdoors for groups of people who traditionally face barriers to participation. They believe that the outdoors should be a place for everyone.

Archery

Time: 10:00 and 16:00
Location: On lawn next to the old council offices near Oriel Davies. Booking on the day at the Oriel Davies Gallery Hub.

FREE Archery taster sessions with the Hafren Foresters Archery Club.

Come and have a go at this ancient sport.  Experienced coaches will be on hand for those who want to try.  Equipment and training will be provided for those interested to try this fun skill. 

Anyone 8 and over is welcome but children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult.

Guided group Cycle Ride for women

Location: Starting from Oriel Davies Gallery

Border Biking Belles

Social Ride for Women with Border Biking Belles

Join the Border Biking Belles for a women’s (18+) only social ride suitable for beginner/intermediate rider with some experience of road and group cycling. Please ensure bike is road worthy and a helmet is compulsory.   

We will ride as a group with a front and back rider, enjoying the local area and cycling between 15 and 20 miles.  Ride at your own risk.

Booking is essential on Eventbrite and booking is now open.

Fishing

Time: 11:00 & 14:00
Location: On lawn in front of Oriel Davies. Booking on the day at the Oriel Davies Gallery Hub.

FREE Fly casting lessons organised by River Severn Custodians 

Each casting session will comprise approx. 20 mins demonstration and then an additional hour  for people to have a go.  Equipment will be provided for those interested to have a go and that children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult.

 

Gardening

Time: 11:00 to 15:00

Gardening organised by Newtown Garden Club

The Club is a friendly group of garden lovers from Newtown and the surrounding area. They aim to help people enjoy gardening at every level from window box to large gardens. Visit their stall to find out about their programme of talks and garden visits. Buy plants locally grown by members.  

bike bubbles & art

Free cycle activities with The Pedal Emporium sponsored by Open Newtown

Try out some fun bicycle activities and use your own power to create a flurry of bubbles.  Channel your inner Jackson Pollock to create a unique artwork.  The Pedal Emporium recycles and re-purposes bikes to promote cycling and sustainability.

The pedal powered bubble machine is simple.  The more you pedal the more bubbles you make.  The one-of-a-kind Whirly Wheels Bicycle turns a table to spray paint in a beautiful, hypnotic design, creating an artwork for you to take home.

Free outdoor concert by Llanidloes Choirs For Good

Listen to a concert by the Llanidloes health and well-being choir, Choirs for Good, sing some familiar and cheerful songs in the park in front of Oriel Davies Gallery.  The choir will be singing for free but collecting donations for the Welsh Air Ambulance if you want to donate.
